The Cornish Language Myth.

This post will be in English to reach a wider audience.(by the way Sawsnek is the wrong word for the language, the English do not call themselves Saxons or speak Saxon, therefore the term is wrong, kind of like calling the French  'Franks). Cornish is dialect of one of the languages spoken by people who colonized the western parts of Britain, other dialects included Welsh and Irish Gaelic.Cornish was spoken at least in the western part of the Duchy until the 18th century. the language survived  in written records of various plays and prose pieces. An attempt was made to revive the language first as a written language and then as a spoken language in the mid 20 the century. Initially the revival was based on the medieval period and used the uncertain orthography used by the scribes back then. It was decided it the language was to be revived as a modern spoken language the orthography would have to be revised to fit  the needs of the 21st Century. An orthography was chose  and used by the majority of users of Cornish IE those who spoke and write it,(not those who studied it occasionally like those who study Latin or Ancient Greek). Unfortunately the classicist's wanted authentic old Cornish rather than authentic Modern Cornish, they stamped their feet, hired some 'top guns' from outside , who proceed to convince the politicians to demand changes or to withhold funding for the propagation of the revived modern language.

The result appears to be a hybrid language taking into account different strata of the language, this is called orthographical design, the result is kind of like designing an orthography for English to accommodate speakers of  Saxon, Middle English, Tudor English, Cockney and Scots.

Whither the language in 2008?
